Experience Tohoku- the wilds of North Japan.
This less traveled region rewards visitors with opportunities for adventures in a variety of landscapes as well as culinary experiences in the heart of traditional sake brewing. Our national parks offer pristine trails up volcanoes across alpine wetlands or along the 200-meter cliffs of the Sanriku Coast. Whether you’re looking for a full-day challenging hike or a more casual exploration of this stunning area, Tohoku will exceed your expectations. Come forage for wild edibles along a mountain stream in the spring, then taste the fruits of your labor with a local cook. Visit highlights of the Michinoku Coastal Trail, then go kayaking or ride a little fishing boat to view the landscape from the sea. Hike along a ridgeline with all the glory of the autumn leaves spreading out in every direction. Snowshoe among the famous snow monsters or visit a frozen waterfall. It’s all possible here!

My name is Quinlan Faris. I started GoNorth Japan back in 2010 as a website to share information about many of the hidden gems in Northern Japan. Initially, it featured articles and photos from local festivals, historical sites, and scenic areas. Then in April of 2019, after encouragement from Chris Broad, a popular Youtuber, the GoNorth Japan Youtube Channel was born. I moved into the guiding industry in 2018, and now offer a number of full-day excursions. I also guide multiple-day hikes and tours when working in partnership with local travel agencies, and am available to guide your group for a week or more. In addition to the excursions displayed on this site, I provide custom tour creation services, so if you are looking for something different, feel free to contact me and we can design something ideal for you!
I am certified as a Wilderness First Responder by the Wilderness Medical Associates. I also am an SSI Certified International Sake Sommelier, and a Nature Experience Activity Leader.
