Hike Akita Komagatake

Akita Komagatake, or Akikoma as locals call it, is a glorious startovolcano just 10km east of Lake Tazawa in the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. There are two primary trailheads, one on the Iwate side from Kunimi hot springs that involves a longer hike with more ascent, and an easier option on the Akita side that starts up at the 8th station lodge.

There are a number of trails that visit the various summits and valleys in this area, and we'll visit calderas within calderas. The numerous eruptions that have taken place here over the centuries created some really gorgeous landscapes here. The most recent eruption in 1970-71 left a huge area of solidified lava and a few small gas vents that continue to smoke. A number of alpine flowers draw Japanese hikers from June through August, and the fall colors really transform the mountain from mid-September.

Because this area has 5 main summits, I tailor this hike to the ability level and comfort of the group that I'm guiding here. Depending on which route we take, this can be anything from a hike appropriate for children and people of any age, to a somewhat challenging hike that will satisfy any seeker of adventure and gorgeous ridgewalks.

Exact dates vary, but this tour is generally available form 5/15 through 11/5. (I lead groups here via snowshoe from 12/20 - 3/15, but that tour is described on a separate page.) We leave early in the morning, and return by mid-late afternoon back in Morioka.
