Hike Mt. Iwate

Mt. Iwate stands between Morioka and Hachimantai in the southern part of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. There are six main trails to the summit, which offer a variety of views as well as level of difficulty. I will select a trail for the group based on the time of year (what the terrain is like, what flowers in bloom, etc.) and their level of physical fitness. This is a challenging hike, with an ascent of around 1500 meters, and a total distance ranging between 10 and 20km depending on the trail.

We start early in the morning, preferably not long after dawn, make a stop at a convenience store to buy lunch and drinks, then hit the trail. The entire hike will take between 6 and 9 hours depending on the route and pace. The longer routes allow for a stunning ridgewalk along the section known as Onigajo, the "Demon's Castle." The edge of the summit caldera resembles Mt. Fuji, and is ringed with 66 stone Buddhist statues, and there is an ancient temple-turned-shrine down in the crater that we can visit.

I recommend only experienced hikers or long distance runners in good physical condition sign up for this hike. The distance and elevation gain are actually greater than hiking Mt. Fuji, though the elevation is of course much lower. If you're not in good physical shape for a lot of ascent and long hiking, this potentially sublime experience could become an ordeal.

Exact dates vary, but this tour is generally available form 6/1 through 10/31. We leave early in the morning, and return by late afternoon back in Morioka.

I usually make this a day hike, but if you're interested in spending the night at the 8th Station lodge so we can view the sunset and sunrise, that is possible during the summer. Inquire about the overnight hike if interested.
